Highlights

We had a very busy day today. We started with morning challenge and Math. In math, our lesson focused on counting by 5's and 10's using a number line. We created our own number line and used it to skip count. We started at a random number (i.e. 59) and added 5 or 10 each time. We had music and gym this morning. We have new spelling words. The list is in their green folder. Before lunch, we had Daily 5. After lunch we had writing. We're currently focusing on, how to write a proper sentence. We had Social Studies today. We were introduced to the first country we're learning about, India. Today we explored resources on India and discussed interesting facts we read. At the end of the day we finished our Frankenstein art.

Important Information:
We have a Rocks and Minerals presentation from Scientists in School on Nov. 9th. We are in need of 4 parent volunteers. This year, the school has decided to use Sign-Up Genius. Highlights
In Math, the students are learning that there are many ways to represent the same number using base ten blocks. Example: 236 can be built using 2 hundreds, 3 tens, 6 ones OR 1 hundred, 13 tens, 6 ones.

The students had their first 'choice' day for Daily 5. They chose to go to either Read to Self, Work on Writing, or Read to Someone for 25 minutes today.

We read the story "Country Frog, City Dog" and made connections from our 3 brain pockets (fact, memory, imagination). The connections were related to a feeling from the book, the story itself, a character from the story or from a picture in the book. This led to some great discussions as a class.

We had SO much fun in Science today! Our question was: Why do some volcanoes explode? We investigated how differences in lava types explain differences in the shape and eruption patterns among volcanoes. We experimented with “lava” of different thicknesses to solve the mystery.

Extras from today:

  • Unity Assembly
  • Birthday Candle Art
  • Fire Drill

Math Test: Unit 1, Patterns

The math test was sent home today. Please review the test with your child. It is important they know what mistakes they made and how they could have answered any missed questions differently. We would like you to sign the test and return them to school at your convenience. It is important for you to know that this test is not their final report card mark for this unit. It is simply a snapshot of their independent work and test taking abilities. For many of our students, this is the first sit-down type of test they've completed in their school years thus far.

In this unit, your child has learned to:
·      Identify, extend, create, and compare increasing patterns.
·      Identify, extend, create, and compare decreasing patterns.
·      Find pattern rules.
·      Display number patterns on hundred charts.
·      Use patterns to solve problems.

Patterns can be found all around us. Please continue to encourage your child to look for patterns around the home, and talk about them.

Here are some suggestions for activities you can do at home:
·      Look for patterns in your family’s activities as marked on a calendar at home. What activities do you do daily? Twice a week? Every week?
·      Use small objects like buttons or coins to make patterns that grow or shrink. Encourage your child to describe and extend the patterns.  (e.g. Start with ____, then increase/decrease by ____.)
·      Count collections of nickels and dimes by 5s and by 10s. Count pennies by 2s.
·      Find examples of geometric patterns in floor tiles or on game boards.

·      Complete the extra practice sheets we send home for homework.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding your child's mark on their test, please write a note and attach it to the test when you return it to us.

We will write our regular blog message tomorrow (Friday) as there was no school on Monday. Next week the blog will also be posted on Tuesday and Friday.

Today we began a new unit in Math: Numbers to 1000! Pattern tests have been marked and will be sent home on Thursday for your review. In Science, we learned about landslides and the effect they can have on a community. They were asked: How could you survive a landslide? They learned a bit about what causes landslides and it opened up a lot of conversation around Alberta's own Turtle Mountain (Frank Slide).

Today the students finished their first Math test on increasing (growing) and decreasing (shrinking) patterns. They will be marked over the weekend and sent home for your review next week. We also took the spelling quiz today and they were marked and sent home. We did a Thanksgiving art project today using a guided drawing technique and water colour pencil crayons. The students did a great job! This afternoon the students were tasked with the question: Could a volcano ever pop up in your backyard? We mapped out volcanos around the world and learned about the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. The students earned an extra recess with good character this week so we took advantage of the beautiful weather today and went outside at the end of the day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Highlights:
What a crazy way to start October. The students had indoor recess today. Normally, student's do not stay inside unless it is -20'c (with the wind chill) but because many student's didn't come dressed for the weather and also because it is extremely windy outside, the student's stayed inside.

We started our day with math. We used a calculator to create an increasing number pattern and then we reproduced that pattern onto a 100's chart. The students worked with a partner and tried to see if their partners could find the missing number to their pattern. We had music and gym this morning. After gym, we had Daily 5. We're continuing to train and build stamina. The student's had 5 new spelling words today. After lunch we worked on a special art project with our grade 2 buddies. We're designing our own shield out of clay. It was messy but so much fun!
