Highlights

This morning we finished lesson 7 in math. The students were learning to skip count using coins (penny=1 cent, nickel=5 cents, dime=10 cents, quarter=25 cents). We want them to be able to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 25s. Please see the homework page that was sent home today and work through it with your child.

We worked on helping verbs for our writing lesson today. The students should understand that every sentence has 2 parts (subject=WHO/WHAT and predicate=DOING/DESCRIBING). Often the link between the subject and predicate is the helping verb. Examples include: will, am, is, has, might, can, was, do, had, does, etc.

I / will play in the snow after school. ('I' is the subject. 'will play in the snow after school' is the predicate. 'play' is the verb. 'will' is the helping verb.

We had so much fun in science today! We learned about which materials were used to make toys long ago and why our great-grandparents may have only had 1 or 2 toys growing up. We learned about who invented plastic and how it is now used to produce a mass amount of toys. Our experiment answered the question: Why are so many toys made of plastic? We put to use that extra Halloween candy and learned about melting and the solid and liquid states of matter. The students tested the meltable property of candy.

Important Updates Sent this week via School Messenger from the PHS Office (Please Read):

·       Morning routine – We would like to remind you of our morning entry protocol to school.
Teachers will stand beside school doors until 8:07AM to transition students into school. A sign will be posted in the door window at 8:07AM to inform you the doors have been secured. After this time teachers need to be assisting students in the classroom and instruction begins at 8:10AM. If a student arrives and doors have already been secured please take them to the front school doors. Students will receive a late slip after 8:10AM. Thank you for ensuring your child is present and ready to learn each morning.

·       Item drop offs – Students will not receive any items dropped off to the school after 8:10AM before a suitable break in programming. This is to minimize interruptions to student learning.

·       Road Safety update – AMA has visited our school and completed a Traffic Safety assessment outside the school. They have not approved school student patrols due to the traffic intensity in the area at this time. They will be joining us on Friday to deliver a presentation around safely crossing roads. In the meantime, as a convenience to the community we will continue to assist with turn taking at the North crosswalk intersection in the mornings only. At no time will we be directing traffic, and ask that you continue to take responsibility in safely crossing the road with your child.

·       Kindercare – We would like to share that Pleasant Heights Before and After School will be expanding their program to Kindercare as of December 4, 2017. Staff from Pleasant Heights will be at the school for parent/teacher interviews November 16th (evening 4:30 – 8:00PM) and 17th (morning 8:00 – 12:00PM) to answer any questions you may have. Registration will begin October 31st. Please contact Pleasant Heights at the email below to register or to ask questions you may have.

·       Dog By-laws – I would like to thank everyone for working with us to improve the issue we were experiencing with dogs around the school grounds. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring dogs are kept on pathways and away from students. To clarify the by law, pathways separate the city land from CBE school grounds and as such belong to the city.

·       Photo retakes – Photo retakes will be completed on Tuesday November 14th. You will be receiving your proofs shortly.

·       School Council – Next School Council meeting will be November 23rd 7PM, we would love to see you there!
