Monday February 26th 2018

Highlights:
We had another busy day in grade 3. We started our morning with a class discussion about the Olympics. The students are very interested in this subject. We finished our medal count bulletin board. We had a lot of fun tracking the medals. The students also solved this math question today. How many medals did the top 5 countries earn? Norway - 39, Germany - 31, Canada - 29, USA - 23 and Netherlands - 20. The students tried many different strategies and most were able to come up with the right answer.
We had music and gym today. For the next two weeks of gym, the students will be learning a hip-hop dance and they'll be preforming it in front of the school on March 9th. After gym we had spelling. Today the students were also introduced to cursive writing. This week they will learn 2 letters per day. The letters we're focusing on this week are swing letters (i, t, u, s, j, p, r, w). Today's letters were i and t.
We started planning our 'freezing' stories. They will continue this tomorrow. We also started our good copies of our Olympic writing. We contributed to #pinkitforward. The students wrote messages of kindness and encouragement on a pink sticky and we attached it to a large banner that the whole school is contributing too. We read chapter 18 in our novel study.

Thursday February 22nd 2018

Highlights:
This week has been a busy one. We're continuing our math unit on addition and subtraction. Lesson 9 homework was sent home yesterday and lesson 10 homework will be sent home on Friday. We've continued our Olympic writing. The students are excited to share their work with you during Student Led Conferences on March 22nd and 23rd. We will be starting cursive writing on Monday. In social studies, we're coming to the end of our Ukraine unit. There will be no formal test for this unit. Yesterday, the students completed a comparison of the similarities and differences between Canada and Ukraine. In science, students are continuing to learn about hearing and sound. They made a charcoal sketch of the inside of the ear and today they made straw flutes.
Next week, we're starting an exciting writing project. They'll be writing a themed story about freezing. Eventually, these stories will be turned into a published class book.

Reminders:
February 23rd - Spirt day athletic wear – Wear a team jersey or other appropriate clothing from a sport that you play.

Wednesday February 14th

Reminder:
There is no school Thursday February 15th and Friday February 16th due to Teacher's Convention. There is also no school on Monday February 19th due to Family Day. We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful log weekend.

Highlights:
The student's have been busy working this week. During our math lesson today, the students asked for some extra practice sheets. They're working on subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping. Please review this concept with them while they're working on the practice sheet. I've asked them to return it next week. We will continue to practice this concept throughout grade 3.

We're really enjoying learning about the Olympics and the athletes participating in the Olympics. Today, we started a writing piece about the sport we've been learning about. It's wonderful to see how excited the students are about their particular sport. We also finished our quick draw of Soohorang. He is one of the mascots of these Olympics. We also started an art activity today where we used abstract paper and geometric shapes to create Olympic athletes. We made a cross-country skier today. See the examples below.

💖 We also celebrated Valentine's Day. Thank you for the wonderful cards and chocolates. It was wonderful to see how much time and care the students put into making their Valentine’s for their classmates.

Monday February 12th

Highlights:
We started our morning with math. Today's lesson focused on estimating differences. When you estimate a difference, you predict a number that is close to the exact number you would get by subtracting. Example: 52-38=? Round both numbers to the closest 10 and subtract. 50-40=10. The answer is about 10. After math we had music and an indoor recess. After snack we went to the gym for our Jump Rope for Heart assembly. A package of information went home today. Attached to the package is a pledge form/envelope. There are two ways to collect pledges. Student's can collect cash/cheques or collect donations online. Please follow the instruction in the package to collect donations online. After our assembly, student's had free writing time.

After lunch we had computers. The bulletin board outside of our classroom has been turned into an Olympic medal count chart. Student's are working with a partner to track medals won by a specific country. The student's used the computers to locate the country their responsible for on a map as well as track the amount of medals won by that county so far. See the picture below.

After Computers, Avizheh shared her Science in a Box. She taught us about how volcano's form and work. We also began a quick draw in our visual journals. We're drawing Soohorang. He is a white tiger and one of the mascots of the 2018 winter Olympics.

***Tomorrow the class will be going on a community walk to CNG to work with their grade 7 buddies***

Reminders:
Valentines Day - February 14th. A class list will be going home with all the students names. If you would like to pass out valentines please bring one for all the students in the class.

February 12th - Wear RED!

Thursday, Feb. 8th, 2018

Highlights:

Today the students worked on adding 3-digit numbers together. This is a difficult task, but they seem to be doing quite well. They like the 'right to left' math strategy as well as breaking the numbers apart. The students took their spelling quiz. They were marked and sent home today. They will not have spelling next week. We started annotating expository and narrative text this week. The students are numbering the paragraphs, locating the title, and learning about the main event and elaborative details. In science, the students learned about safe hearing and we tested out a decibel app on the iPads by walking around the school and recording the results.

Stay safe on these winter roads!

Monday February 5th 2018

Highlights

Today we started our morning with math. The lesson focused on using mental math strategies to add. We had music and gym. After gym we had spelling. Before lunch, we discussed our Olympic research project. Today, the students randomly picked an event to research. Many of these events are new to the students. After lunch, they used computers to find information on the sport they're researching. They also picked a Canadian athlete to research about. They will follow this athlete throughout the Olympics. We had writing and character circle. For character circle, we read the book, “Everyone makes Mistakes” by Christine MacLean. We discussed how making mistakes is a part of life and how all people make mistakes. Sometimes they’re small mistakes and sometimes they’re big mistakes. We also learn from our mistakes.

**The students in our class will have an opportunity to participate in the morning announcements. We will be reading facts about the 2018 Winter Olympics on the announcements. If your child comes home with a blurb about the Olympics, please help them practice at home**
